Panasonic 3DO
The Panasonic 3DO entered with a different approach.
It wasn’t positioned as a single system, but as a format — a standard that multiple manufacturers could produce. The intent was broader, aiming to establish a platform rather than just a console.
It carried a sense of distance from everything else.
CD-based media, full-motion video, and expanded audio pushed the experience forward, but the structure around it remained unsettled. It wasn’t tied to the same expectations or direction as the systems around it.
It existed outside the flow.
What it introduced showed potential, but the timing and approach didn’t align with where the industry was moving. Its ideas would continue elsewhere, in more refined forms.
The 3DO didn’t follow the path.
It tried to define a different one.
