The Sega CD explored a different direction.
It expanded beyond cartridges, introducing a format that allowed for more data, longer audio, and new ways to build experiences. The structure began to shift, even if it hadn’t settled yet.
It was a step into something unfamiliar.
Games moved between styles — some grounded in what came before, others reaching toward ideas that would take time to fully develop. There wasn’t a single path, just multiple attempts at what could come next.
It didn’t fully align.
The potential was there, but the form was still taking shape. What it introduced would later be refined elsewhere, but here, it existed in its early stages.
The Sega CD didn’t define the future.
It searched for it.
